Avadhi Residence
Principal Designer: Anant Mairal
Execution team: Build TLA
Design team: Anant Mairal, Bala Ceani
Location: Chennai, Tamilnadu
Situated in a typical Chennai residential street surrounded by mundane built environments, this house was conceived with the intent of focusing inward—drawing inspiration from the house itself and the open sky above, rather than the street. The design is an attempt to create a sense of well-being through thoughtful space-making, with courtyards, varying ceiling heights, and the use of elemental materials.

The journey begins with a driveway that leads into a spacious living room, with a terrace above it accessible from the first floor. The centrally located dining area serves as the heart of the home, flanked by a staircase that connects the upper levels, a kitchen, a spill-out courtyard, and an attached guest bedroom on the ground floor.
The materials—rammed earth, achikal brick masonry, and exposed finishes in concrete, glass, and steel—combine to express a contemporary design vocabulary. This architectural language is both an honest response to the surroundings and an attempt to enrich the built environment of the street, adding value to the neighborhood.
